Life story

Life story

Emma Winton nee Hedger 1835 - 1897 Emma Hedger of Rackham Sussex, married William Winton of Lancing and had two sons, Charles and Arthur. Only Charles survived infancy and went on to become a carpenter. William was an agricultural worker until his late fifties when he was a beer house keeper in Worthing.

Biography

Emma was born in Rackham, Sussex, in 1835 to Frederick Hedger, an agricultural labourer and his wife Hannah Humphrey, Emma married William Winton from Lancing in November 1860 and their son Charles was born in 1862. Their second son, Alfred, died as an infant in 1865.

They moved to Sompting by 1881 and in 1891 they were living in the King and Queen's Head, in Brunswick Street Worthing. William was the beer house keeper and their son, Charles, was a carpenter. Emma died in April 1897 and was buried in Heene Cemetery on 28th April.
