Her father was a banker and brewer. She was baptised at Stoke Damerel on 16 September 1853. Thomas died in 1864. Her mother moved to London with Emma and her sister Cordelia. In 1879, Emma's mother married Thomas Pooley Smyth at Christ Church Paddington. Mrs Smyth died at Paignton in 1882. Emma continued to live with her step-father and eventually moved to Worthing with him. Thomas Smyth died in Worthing in 1895 and is buried in Heene Cemetery (see separate record). Emma moved to Cobham in Surrey, living next door to her sister Cordelia who had married a farmer. She moved twice around the area, finally settling at The Paddock, Cobham in 1922. A woman of independent means, she inherited a further annuity of £300 per year in 1935 from the will of George Hobson Thompson of Leicester. Emma died on 24 December 1936 whilst staying at the Hotel Royal Westminster in Menton, France. Probate was granted on 15 February 1937 to Hugh Alexander Merriman solicitor.
