Life story

Life story

Emma was born in Dodbrooke near Kingsbridge, Devon. She was the daughter of Andrew Vossey (Voysey) and his wife Elizabeth nee Lane. Her mother died when she was about 16 and Emma went into service in the household of William Walters, a farmer. Emma married twice. Her first husband was Joseph Gribble whom she married in March 1875 at Portsea, Hampshire. Emma was widowed shortly after and remarried on 25th December 1879. Her husband was Charles William Hewlett, a seaman in the Royal Navy. They married at Milton, Portsea, Hampshire. The couple had no children. In 1881, whilst Charles was at sea on HMS Seraphis, Emma was lodging at 73 Sunny (Surrey) Street, Portsea. By 1881, Emma and Charles were living in Greenwich at the Royal Hospital School, St Alphage. In 1901, the couple were living in Islington but shortly before Emma died in 1904, they had moved to Worthing, living at 47 The Drive. Charles remarried after Emma's death and continued to live in The Drive until his death in 1916. No probate.
