Life story

Life story

Emma was born in West Wycombe on 21 December 1862 and baptised on 20th December 1863.  Her father, Bracey Anthony, was a chair maker, and her mother, Sarah (nee Newell) was a chair polisher. All the family was involved in  the production of chairs. Sarah died in 1868 and the following year, Bracey married Patience Foley. As a young woman, Emma moved to Ealing, working in service for an accountant and his family. In 1881, she sailed to India and met Charles Gibson, a sergeant in the Royal Engineers. Emma married Charles Gibson on 18 March 1882. Records agree on the date but give two versions of where the marriage took place. It could have been at the Presbyterian Church in Carnmoney, County Antrim, Ireland, where Charles was born, or in Roorkee, Bengal, India where Charles was stationed. Their first child, Florence Eleanor, was born on 24th October 1882 and baptised in Roorkee. A son, Charles Sidney was born on 12th December 1883 but died of dysentery on 15th September 1884. In 1905, Florence married Arthur Cozens in Darjeeling.  By 1911 Charles and Emma were back in England and living at Kinbrae, Browning Road, Worthing. In 1921 they were at 3, Wordsworth Road, Worthing, where Emma, widowed in 1936, died on 27 March 1938. Probate was granted on 23rd April to Florence Eleanor Cozens (wife of Arthur Cozens). Effects £1075 9s 1d.
