Life story

Emma Wrate was born in Sheerness, Kent, she was baptised on 29th July 1827 at Minster in Sheppey. Her parents were John Wrate, 30yrs, Agricultural Labourer, and Elizabeth, 26yrs. She had 3 younger siblings, James b.1833, Henry b.1835, and Anna b.1838.

She married Joseph Barber on 14th October 1844, at Sheppey, Kent, he was in the Royal Navy, joining at the age of 15yrs, and completing 22 years service. They had a daughter, Matilda, in 1849.

In 1871, Emma and Joseph (retired Naval Pensioner) lived in Broadwater, Worthing, and in 1881, they were living in Hove, Sussex. In 1891 Emma and Joseph were living back in Worthing, at 7, Milton Street, Worthing, where she died, the following year on 3rd April 1892, aged 64yrs.                                                                                                                                    Probate was granted to her husband, effects £160 3s 8d. Value 2021 - £21K.
