Life story

Life story

Emma's name was registered as Emma Elizabeth Morley Hazell but she was always known as "Nina". She was born in Cambridge, the daughter of John and Elizabeth. Her father was a carpenter. John died in 1852 and Elizabeth in 1854. One of the sons was sent into the Navy and Emma was sent to an orphan school in Ham, Surrey. By 1871, Emma was working as a nurse for a physician in Richmond, Surrey. She stayed in touch with the family as records show that she was visiting them in Brighton in 1881. On 25th August 1888, Emma married Brandon Michael Alexander at Brompton Oratory in Kensington. Brandon was from a Jewish family in Bristol and worked as a barrister. In 1894, he converted to the Catholic faith. The couple moved to Worthing, living firstly in Crescent Road and then in Downview Road. They had no children. Brandon died in 1918. For a while, Emma lived in Bath but returned to Worthing in 1921. She died at "Marcina" in Downview Road on 26th March 1932. Probate was granted on 14th June to William Alfred White bank manager. Effects £6057 12s 4d. Re-sworn £5707 12s 4d. Re-sworn £5881 10s 9d.

"Marcina" became a private hotel in 1933 and was sold in 1958.
