Life story

Life story

Emily was born in Islington, the daughter of Dr William Flight and his wife Sarah. By 1851, the family had moved to Mitcham in Surrey. As a young woman, Emily worked as a teacher. On 13 August 1863, she married George James Saunders at St Nicholas Church, Chiswick. Their first son George Walter was born in 1866 followed by Thomas in 1869. In 1877, a son Richard was born followed by a daughter Mary in 1878. Both babies were baptised on 2nd June 1878 at St John the Baptist Church, Margate. Sadly Mary died the next month in Greenwich and Richard died in October 1879 also in Greenwich (1911 census confirms the loss of two children). Emily and George continued to live in Greenwich until 1895 when Emily's failing health persuaded George that they should move to the coast. George bought The Chappell Croft in Mill Road, Worthing.
