Life story

Emily Rosamund Hensman was born in July 1857 in Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire, she was the daughter of Uriah Hensman, 34yrs, grocer, and Ann, 39yrs, nee Elvidge. Emily was the youngest of 5 children, John, 9yrs, Mary, 7yrs, Eno, 4yrs, and Lettie, 2yrs.

Emily became a draper's assistant in London, where she met Frederick Albert Hookey, who was also a draper's assistant and they married in St. Pancras in January 1883. They had 2 children, Catherine Mary, born 1887, and Frederick, born 1900.

By 1891, Frederick had settled his family in Eastbourne, Sussex, he had his own drapery business with 3 employees. In 1901 Frederick and family were in Funtington, near Chichester, and by 1911 they had moved to Tarring Road, Worthing, Sussex, where they ran a drapery shop, Emily and their daughter, Catherine, both assisted in the business.

Emily was widowed when Frederick Albert died on 5th November 1926, aged 76yrs, and three years later, Emily died, at Seabrook Nursing Home, Queen's Road, Worthing, on 17th October 1929, aged 72yrs. Her address was 219, Tarring Road, probate was granted to her daughter, Catherine Mary Hookham, (wife of Augustus Hookham), and son, Frederick Hensman, draper, effects £6835 16s 7d. Value 2023 - £535,400.
