Life story

Emily Frances Gibbs was born in Lambeth  on 20th February 1846 to John Matthew Gibbs, 45yrs, and Margaret Ann Gibbs, 39yrs, nee Phillips. Her father was Clerk to a merchant, they lived at Guildford Place, Lambeth. She had at least 7 siblings, John Frederick 1832, David Alexander 1835, Henry Charles 1836, Margaret Ann 1839, George Reynell 1841, Edward William 1843, and Elizabeth Mary 1849.

As an adult, Emily lived with her parents at the family home, 19, Maze Hill, Greenwich, her father died in 1885 and her mother in 1894. In 1881 Emily was a probationary nurse at St. Bartholomew's Hospital where her brother, Henry, was employed. Emily never married and remained living with her brother, Henry Charles, together with her younger, unmarried sister, Elizabeth Mary. Henry married Caroline Amelia Powell in 1892 and after Henry retired, they all moved to Worthing, living at Gethylis, Winchester Road.

Emily died on 4th February 1929, aged 82yrs, in Worthing.
