Life story

Life story

Emily Florence Riggall was born on 15th February 1854 at Wandsworth, Surrey, to Edward Riggall 36yrs, MRCS, and Emily 34 yrs. Her brother, Frank Edward, was born in August 1858 but died at 9 days. The family lived in Paddington, and in 1868 Emily's mother died, she then lived with her father until her marriage in 1876 at 22yrs of age. She married Robert Hardwidge, 33yrs, Bank Clerk, in Kensington, they had no children and Emily was widowed in 1892 when Robert died, aged 48yrs. In 1900 Emily's father died and she inherited his estate, making her a very wealthy woman.

She continued to live in London and in 1904 Emily Florence Hardwidge 50 yrs. (nee Riggall) widow, married Reverend Jeremiah Dodsworth 60yrs. widower, Weslyan Minister, at St. Luke's Church, Paddington on 3rd December. Emily, Jeremiah and his daughter, Gertrude, moved to Worthing and lived at 9, Queen's Road, where, in 1909, aged 29yrs, Gertrude died.

Emily was widowed again in 1916 when Jeremiah died, aged 72yrs. She continued to live in Worthing until her own death, in a nursing home at 14, Queen's Road, aged 85yrs.                                                                       Probate was granted to George Frederick Wildash, chartered accountant, and Augustus Gordon Jarrett, Capt. RN. She left estate of £35,832 10s 10d. Value 2019 - £1.5m.

Mrs. Emily Florence Dodsworth, of 9, Queen’s Road, Worthing, who died on January 25th last, widow of the Reverend Jeremiah Dodsworth, left £35,832 10s 10d with net personalty £27,622 3s 9d, (Duty paid £6355). She left £200 conditionally to Heene (Worthing) parish church for the upkeep of the graveyard. £200 for distribution among Metropolitan Police poor boxes; £200 to the Church Army; £200 to the British and Foreign Bible Society; £100 each to the Methodist Missionary Society (women’s branch) and the Worn-Out Minister’s Fund; her wireless set and table to the Worthing Home for the Blind; £100 each to Ethel W. Dearle and Alice Peak, as a slight recognition of their skill and many acts of kindness to her while in their Home, and a further £10 to Ethel W. Dearle for her kindness and skill during a recent illness; £200 to George F. Wildash, chartered accountant, as a small token of her appreciation of his trouble and kindness in looking after her affairs and comfort during her illness. £3,500 to Florence M. Jarrett, £500 to Florence I. Sandy, £2,000 and her residence to Emily C. Bennett; other legacies amounting to about £1,600 and some specific bequests, and the residue to the London Hospital.
