Elva Mary Alice Beckles 1868 – 1935

 Elva Mary Alice Beckles was born in Cambridgeshire in 1868, she was baptised at the parish church in Keymer, Sussex, on 31st August 1868. Elva was born prematurely, but survived, her brother, Henry, born the following year, also prematurely, did not. She was to be the eldest of 5 surviving children, Agnes b.1871, Eustace b.1872, May b.1874, and Margaret b.1881.

Their parents were the Revend Henry McLeod Beckles, b.1846, Rector of Heene, and Charlotte, nee Dodson, b.1844.

Elva remained single, she assisted in many church activities, especially fundraising, and after the death of her father, she remained with her mother and 3 unmarried sisters living in Worthing.

Elva died on 20th May 1935, aged 67yrs, at Highfield, Tarring, Worthing, probate was granted to her sister, May Ethel Beckles, spinster, effects £743 13s 0d. Value 2024 – £66,200.

"Verse 2 Timothy lV v.3" Also of our beloved mother Charlotte Victoria his widow entered her rest Feb 28th 1926. Verse. Also of Elva Mary Alice their eldest daughter fell asleep May 20th 1935. Also of their beloved daughter May Ethel passed on Jan 18th 1960

Miss Frances Henrietta Barclay Watson, of Goring, left £1,000, her large Renault motor-car, and all fittings and accessories to her chauffeur, James Johnson; £1,000, gold ring, and certain furniture to her cook, Mrs. Clare; £1,000 to her butler, Charles Pfeffer; and considerable sums to other employees; besides “several pairs of boots, if they will fit her,” to Elva Beckles, “as I know her to be so good a walker.”
