Life story

Ellen Jemima Ayling was born on 12th June 1848 in Worthing to Walter Shephard Ayling, 20yrs. a Carpenter and Ellen, 22yrs. In 1851 Ellen was 2yrs. old and lived with her parents and younger brother, Walter, 2months at 11, Gloucester Place, Broadwater. When Ellen was 12 yrs. old, she had 4 siblings, Walter 10, Agnes 8, Emily 6 and Albert 1; her father was 32yrs and her mother 33yrs, they still lived at Gloucester Place. In 1867, on December 2nd, Ellen Jemima Ayling aged 19yrs married Martin Streeter 18yrs. at Broadwater, Worthing. In 1871 the family lived at 7, Heene Villas, their first child, William was 3yrs old, Martin worked as a Stoker in the Public Baths and Ellen was a Dressmaker; their daughter, Rosalind, was born in 1872. By 1881 the family lived at Worthing Baths with 5 children, William 13, a Grocer's Assistant, Albert 7, Kate 6, Frank 2 and Henry 2 months; Ellen went on to have 2 more children, Edgar in 1882 and Amy in 1885. In 1891 Ellen Jemima Streeter died on 12th February at 8, Thorn Terrace, Worthing, aged 42yrs. Her death certificate gave the cause of death as "Lateral Sclerosis, Asthenia".
