Life story

Life story

Ellen Jane Carver was the daughter of James Penfold, an agricultural labourer, and his wife, Sarah nee Marshall. She was born in 1846 at Petworth and was baptised on 15 March.

She married Richard Carver, an agricultural labourer, on 25 February 1867 in Broadwater. Sarah signed her name on the certificate but Richard and all the witnesses signed with their mark.

By 1881 Richard and Sarah had moved to Fittleworth and had 4 children. They were in Poling by 1891 and in the Worthing area by 1901 at 5, Brunswick Road, Heene.

Their last home was at 6, Lavington Terrace, The Drive, West Worthing living with their daughter, Lucy Agnes, now married to Edgar Hill, a market gardener on his own account.

Richard and Sarah had had 5 children but one had died by 1911. Ellen died on 13 January 1916. No probate announcement was found.
