Life story

Ellen was born in Marylebone, the daughter of Dr William Jonathan Byam and his wife Mary Ann. She was baptised at St Marylebone church, Westminster on 28th July 1844. Ellen was sent to a private school in Gloucestershire along with her sisters Harriet and Mary. Her father had a practice in London but by 1871, had retired to Gloucestershire. William died on 16th February 1873. The family moved to Portsea in Hampshire where Mary Ann died on 2nd August 1893. Ellen and her sister Elizabeth moved to Worthing, living at "Avenel" in Richmond Road. Ellen died here on 1st April 1918. Probate was granted on 29th April to Elizabeth Mary Byam spinster. Effects £6241 3s 3d.

Ellen's brother Samuel died in a nursing home in Worthing in 1921 and was buried at Heene. Her sister Elizabeth died in Warwick in 1945.
