Life story

Life story

Ellen was born in Heene, the daughter of George and Elizabeth. Her father worked on a local farm as a labourer. She was baptised at West Tarring on 9th March 1856. The family lived at 4 Heene Lane (later Road). As a young woman, Ellen worked as a servant and by 1881, she was working in Shoreham for a clergyman's widow. On 26th October 1889, Ellen married Philip Burtenshaw a tailor, at Heene. The couple moved into two rooms of a house in Cobden Road. By 1899, they had moved to 19 Eriswell Road. Philip and Ellen had no children. In  1918, the couple moved to 20 Heene Road and it was here that Ellen died on 28th August 1928. Probate was granted on 7th November to Philip Burtenshaw tailor. Effects £667 4s 1d. Philip died in 1943.
