Life story

Life story

Thomas Philmore, Ellen's father, was a labourer for Lambeth parish, a roadman, and her mother was Alice, nee Ewin. Ellen was born in 1876 in Stockwell. London, at 17, Fenwick Place. Her father died in 1899 and in the 1901 Census Alice and Ellen, sometimes called Nellie, now a stationer's? assistant were living alone at 17, Fenwick Place. On 29 April 1905 Ellen married Arthur William Barnes at St Andrew's Church, Stockwell and by 1911 they were living at 4, Thorn Road, Worthing, with their 2 children, Gwendoline Alice Mary Philmore Barnes, born 25 May 1906 and Donald Philmore Barnes, born 26 June 1908. Gwendoline never married but was adventurous and spent several years in New South Wales describing herself as a housewife. Donald, a builder's merchant's shop assistant, was also single in 1939 when he, his sister and mother were still living at 4, Thorn Road. Ellen died at the end of 1939 on 20 November at Caer Gwent in Wykeham Road. Donald eventually married Kathelene Norah Nevill in 1943 at Worthing.
