In loving memory of William Wenban Smith who departed this life January 17th 1901 aged 62years. "They rest from their labours and their works do follow them." Also of Elizabeth wife of the above who departed this life May 26th 1883 aged 37years. Her end was peace. And of Mabel, daughter of the above who died July 18th 1883 aged 2 months

Life story

In 1851 Elizabeth is just 5 years old and is visiting her Grandmother, Jane Southerton. Jane is a House Servant to Michael Hull in Wisborough Green. 

Elizabeth's Father was Edmund Lephard, he was considered the pioneer of the development of West Worthing. He became associated with a Mr G J Mills and between them purchased lands in West Worthing and opened many new roads and the building of many detached properties in the Heene area. They purchased land on which Rowlands Road, Wordsworth Road, and Byron Road now stand. Some years later they purchased more land to the east side of Heene Road. 

Elizabeth married William Wenban Smith on the 25th March 1867 at St. Mary's Church Ticehurst Sussex

They had 8 children - 

Mary born 1868, Emily born 1870, Florence born 1872, Louisa born 1874, William E born 1876, Frederick born 1878, Ethel born 1880, Edith Helen born 1882. 

In 1871 they were living at Stanley House, Broadwater Road. William is a Builder employing 17 men and 4 boys. 

By 1881 they have moved to Victoria House next to the Norfolk Hotel Worthing. William's building business has expanded and he is now employing 37 men and 4 boys. They also have a live in general servant and a nurse. 

Elizabeth died on the 26th May 1883, whilst living at 96 Chapel Road Worthing. She died of Phthisis (pulmonary Tuberculosis)
