Life story

Life story

Elizabeth Pearce was born in Aymestrey, Nr. Leominster, Herefordshire, in 1861, she was the daughter of Henry Pearce, 30yrs, Labourer, and Sarah, 30yrs, nee Mound. Elizabeth had 4 siblings, Thomas b.1856, Jane b.1860, Henry b.1866, and Benjamin b.1869; by 1871 the family had moved to Shropshire and her father was employed as a gamekeeper.

On 5th February 1880, Elizabeth, 19yrs, married Richard Thornton, 25yrs, Groom, they settled in Ludlow, Shropshire, and had 3 children, Margaret Jessie b.1881, Sarah Ellen b.1883, Thomas H. b.1884, before moving to Worthing, Sussex, where 2 more daughters were born, Annie Elizabeth b.1886, and Ivy b.1891.

In 1891, they were living at the Stables, New Street, where Richard was employed as a coachman, but in 1892, Elizabeth was widowed, aged just 31yrs. Her infant daughter, Ivy, was adopted by Elizabeth's aunt, in Leominster, Herefordshire and Elizabeth supported her family by working as a lodging house keeper.

In 1911, still occupied as a housekeeper, Elizabeth was living with her married daughter, Annie Scare, in Rowlands Road, where her son-in-law, Ernest Scare was a dairyman. She appears to have remained with them until her death on 23rd February 1927, aged 66yrs.
