Life story

Life story

Elizabeth was born in Horley, Surrey, the daughter of Thomas and Catherine. She was baptised at St Bartholomew's Church, Horley on 13th May 1838. By 1851, Elizabeth or Betsy as she was known, was working as a house servant at Burstow Court in Reigate. She later moved to Sussex and worked as a housemaid at "The White Horse" pub in Chichester. On 24th December 1866, Betsy married Ralph Teesdale at Broadwater Church. The couple lived in Portland Road where Ralph was a fly driver. They later moved to Heene Mews where Ralph had room to stable his cabs and horses. Ralph died in 1897 and Betsy took over the running of the business helped by her son Harry. Betsy died on 11th February 1918. Probate was granted on 9th March to Harry Richard Teesdale stableman and Alice Burgess wife of Harry Ralph Burgess. Effects £465 17s 6d.
