Life story

Life story

Elizabeth never married and was a servant all her life. From being a general servant at 18, she was a nurse in a dental surgeon's family of 3 young children, then a lady's maid with the same family for over 20 years. She was still appreciated as a "useful maid" just before she died. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Snelling, a railway porter and his wife Ellen. She died at Norfolk Lodge, Mill Road, Worthing on 13th November 1911 and her estate was administered by Frederick John Snelling, a retired House of Commons messenger. he would have worn a uniform with a figure of Mercury on it when he worked. Several of the Harvie family are buried at Heene.

Probate was granted on 22nd January 1912 to Frederick John Snelling, retired House of Commons messenger. Effects £184 9s 6d.
