John Carey was a Wesleyan minister. The Wesleyan religion was formed in 1843 in New York by a group of ministers that split from the Methodist Episcopal church. Local  churches are organised into a network of districts with equal representation of clergy at their annual conferences. Ministers are then appointed to various stations at these conferences.
