John Carey was a Wesleyan minister. The Wesleyan religion was formed in 1843 in New York by a group of ministers that split from the Methodist Episcopal church. Local  churches are organised into a network of districts with equal representation of clergy at their annual conferences. Ministers are then appointed to various stations at these conferences. John was appointed to various stations which meant the family moved houses several times-
