Life story

Elizabeth Sarah Ewens was born in Crewkerne, Somerset, she was baptised there on 2nd May 1837. Her parents were William, a grocer, and Mary Ewens, by the age of 14yrs, Elizabeth was in service.

On 21st September 1857, aged 20yrs, Elizabeth married George Tayler Hadwen, 36yrs, at St. Clement Danes, Westminster, London. Her husband was Clerk to a General Merchant, the couple lived in Liverpool, Lancashire, their daughter, Agnes, was born there in 1858, a second daughter, Caroline Bertha, was born in 1863 but sadly died the following year.

After about 20yrs in Liverpool, the family returned to Islington, where George was born, and in the early 1890s they retired to Worthing, Sussex, living at Tabasco, Rowlands Road. On the 1901 census George was registered as totally blind.

Elizabeth was widowed when George died on 13th June 1917, aged 96yrs. She continued to live in Worthing with her daughter, Agnes, and died, aged 93yrs, on 10th January 1930. Probate was granted to Bertram Robert Chisholm, gentleman, effects £6744 14s 8d. Value 2023 - £564,000.
