Life story

Life story

Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Whitehead, an engineer and Hannah. She was born in Oldham the eldest of a large family.

Elizabeth was 17 when she married Christopher Gudgeon, a machine fitter and engineer, at St Mary's Church, Oldham on 25th March 1855.

By 1861, the couple had three children. The eldest, Robert went to live with Elizabeth's parents. No other census records could be found for the family until 1921.

Elizabeth seems to have spent a lot of time abroad mainly in Belgium. The Belgium Antwerp Police Immigration "citizenship and naturalisation" register 1840-1930 lists Elizabeth as Elise plus several of her children: Agnes b1864 in Oldham; Mina b1869 in Verviers; Sarah Ellen b1871 in Verviers; Fred b 1873 in Verviers; Francis b 1877 in Verviers; Guy b 1878 in Verviers.

Christopher died in 1887. Fred married a Lancashire girl but their daughter Emmie was born in Lodz, Poland in 1905. By 1921, Fred was running a confectionery and tobacconist's shop in Worthing, his mother Elizabeth and sister Agnes living with him and his family. Elizabeth died on 20th January 1936. No probate.
