Life story

Elizabeth Mary Gibbs was born in Lambeth on 23rd November 1848 to John Matthew Gibbs, 48yrs, and Margaret Ann Gibbs, 42yrs, nee Phillips, she was baptised on November 25th1849 at Kennington Parish Church. Her father was Clerk to a merchant, they lived at Guildford Place, Lambeth. She had at least 7 siblings, John Frederick 1832, David Alexander 1835, Henry Charles 1836, Margaret Ann 1839, George Reynell 1841, Edward William 1843, and Emily Frances 1846.

As an adult, Elizabeth lived with her parents at the family home, 19, Maze Hill, Greenwich, her father died in 1885 and her mother in 1894. Elizabeth never married and remained living with her brother, Henry Charles, together with her older, unmarried sister, Emily Frances. Henry married Caroline Amelia Powell in 1892 and after Henry retired, they all moved to Worthing, living at Gethylis, Winchester Road.

Elizabeth Mary Gibbs died in Worthing, aged 91yrs, on 23rd February 1940.
