Life story

Life story

Elizabeth Jane Wells was born on 24th August 1862 in Richmond, Surrey, she was baptised at Mortlake, on 20th September 1862. She was the daughter of George Wells, 22yrs, Labourer, (later, Miller) and Jane, 21yrs, nee Wilkins. Jane's youngest sibling was a sister, Harriet Louisa, born 1872.

In 1881 Elizabeth was a Mantlemaker, (Tailoring over- garments for ladies). She married James Fyfe, 33yrs, on 16th July 1898 at St. John's, Kensal Green; James was born in Scotland, he was the son of a tailor, he was employed as a stockbroker's clerk.

Elizabeth and James lived in Ilford, Essex, before moving to Willesden Green, N.W. London, where they were still living in 1921. They had no children. At some point they moved to 12, Grand Avenue, Worthing, Sussex, where Elizabeth was widowed in 1931, and when she died on 26th May 1942, aged 79yrs, at St. Richard's Hospital, Chichester, her address was 39, Brooklyn Avenue, Worthing.

Administration was granted to Harriett Louisa Penrose, effects, £145 11s 11d. Value 2022 - £7K.
