Life story

Elizabeth was born in Monsea, Tipperary, Ireland, the daughter of John Carew and his wife Eliza nee Massy Robbins. Census records for 1841-1871 were destroyed in a fire in Dublin in 1922. On 28th December 1865, Elizabeth married John Allen Johnson-Walsh at St Peter's Church, Dublin. The couple lived at St Anne's Hill, County Cork. John died here on 3rd April 1883 leaving an estate of £9238. Elizabeth married again on 14th April 1885 in Cork. Her husband was a distant cousin, Richard Reginald Carew, the illegitimate son of Robert Carew JP of Woodenstown, Tipperary. Their daughter Elizabeth Nesta was born in Carrigrohane, Cork on 25th December 1888. By 1901, the family were living in Guernsey. In 1905, they moved to Worthing, living at "Hazlewood" in Winchester Road. Richard died on 15th December 1917. Elizabeth continued to live at "Hazlewood" (now no.4) until her death on 9th December 1930. Probate was granted on 23rd April 1931 to Elizabeth Nesta Massy Carew spinster. Effects £214 15s 9d.
