Story

Eliza was born in Washington, the daughter of William and Harriet Knight. She was baptised in the village on 18 Mar 1855. Her father William was a lime burner. By 1871, Eliza was in Worthing, working for a Wesleyan Minister and his family. In 1877, she married William Stacey, a journeyman baker and the family travelled around Sussex for William’s work before eventually settling in Worthing. They had nine surviving children but in May 1895, Eliza gave birth to a daughter, Bellina May. Sadly, the baby died in September and is buried at Heene. Three of her sons and her husband are buried in plots scattered around the cemetery.

Eliza died c19 Mar 1910 and was buried at Heene on 22 Mar.
