Story

Eliza Catherine Milne was born in 1850 in Holme Hale, Norfolk. She was baptized at St. Andrews at a private baptism by her father on the 19th of December 1850. She was the daughter of Henry and Susanna Milne.

Holme Hale is situated in the Breckland District of Norfolk and has less than 500 inhabitants. Its main church is the Church of St. Andrew where her father was Rector from 1844-1888.It was an amalgamation of two villages. Holme was deserted after 1352, possibly due to the plague. The name, first recorded in 1267 as Holmhel comes from the Old Norse for small island or river meadow. There was no evidence of Saxon dwellings but late Iron Age, Roman and Medieval artefacts had been found in the area. Several post-medieval buildings survive in the village, including Bury’s Hall, built in the 16th century, the Old Thatched House built in the 17th century, the old post mill and workhouse whose location has been lost to time.

The 1851 census records five-month-old Eliza in Holme Hale living with her father, 35-year-old Rector Henry and 29-year-old mother Susan, both were from Manchester. Their family’s home was shared with two brothers, Richard (6) and William (4) and an older sister, Frances, who was two. They had six servants attend to their household.

In 1861 the family was still at Holme Hale Parsonage. Richard had moved out but Eliza had a new sister Harriet who was eight and Susan who was one. All three sisters were registered as scholars, (school children). She also had a new brother too, Charles, who was four. They were visited at the time by a clergyman’s daughter, Emily Pyne, who was eight. As well as a cook and a housemaid, there was a governess, a nurse and an under-nurse to see to the children.

By 1871 the family was still at the Parsonage with Frances, Eliza, Harriet and Susan still living in the family home.

In the 1901 census Eliza was living with her widowed mum Susannah/ Susan at Beulee in Heene. Also here were sisters Harriet and Frances plus two servants.

In 1911 Eliza was living with her younger sister Harriet at Darrington, St.Michael’s Road, Worthing. They both lived on private means and had a 42-year-old cook and a 19-year-old housemaid to help them.

By 1918 Eliza had moved to Leaholme, St. Michael’s Road,Worthing and appeared to stay there until the end of the 1920s.

By 1931 she had moved to 8 Tennyson Road, this may have been due to the death of Harriet in April 1930.

In 1934 Eliza had moved to Eyncourt, 42 Shelley Road, Worthing where she stayed until she died on the 8th of July 1938. She left an estate of £2,289 18 shillings and 11 pence. She was a spinster.
