Life story

Life story

Eliza was born in Dundee, Scotland, the daughter of William and Jean (Jane). She was baptised in Dundee on 31st January 1820. William was described as being of independent means in the early census records. On 22nd January 1845, Eliza married Thomas Lilley, a Master Mariner, at St Mary's church, Lambeth. Eliza's address was given as Dundee so it's possible that she met Thomas when his ship was in port there. The couple settled in Camberwell, Surrey after their son Thomas was born in Dundee. He was followed by Agnes Helen in 1848, Alice in 1850, Edmund in 1851 and Arthur in 1855. Thomas was often away and died at sea in 1861. His probate which was not registered until 17th July 1863 states that he died about 24th August 1861 or after that date. Letters of Administration were granted to Eliza as his widow after she had sworn to that effect. Her address was given as 3 Denmark Villas, Brook Hill Road, Greenwich. Thomas's estate was less that £1500. By 1881, the family had moved to Lewisham, Kent. Eliza and her daughter Alice later moved to Portsea, Hampshire. In 1897, both women appeared in the Worthing Visitors List staying at 78 Marine Parade which was a boarding house. Eliza died on 2nd March 1899 at "Seacrest" 3 Victoria Terrace, Marine Parade, Worthing, a boarding house. Her funeral service was held at St Andrew's Church, Clifton Road before burial at Heene. No probate.

Alice moved to St Matthew's Road, Tarring before her death at 78 Northcourt Road, Worthing in 1929. She is buried in Broadwater Cemetery.
