Life story

Life story

Eliza Bridges Jervis was born in 1849 in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire to William and Elizabeth Jervis (nee Jackson).  William worked as a cashier in the local China Manufacturer while they were living in Penkhull, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire.  Elizabeth lived with her parents until 1881, then she left home to become a barmaid at the Shakespeare Inn, Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent. Her Mother died in 1888 and her Father died in 1899.   Then in 1891 she is living with her Sister Amelia and her Husband George Jennings, but does not appear to be working. By 1901 Eliza has found a new job as a Matron of the Bryn Marle convalescent home in Carnarvon, Wales. This convalescent home was created by the Birmingham Hospital Saturday Fund, this was a scheme that helped workers with healthcare in the age before the NHS.  The scheme was a great success and they opened a home in Birmingham for men and one in Llandudno for women and another in nearby Bryn Marle for children.
