Life story

Life story

Elisabeth was born in Bloomsbury, the daughter of John and Elizabeth. She was baptised at St George's church, Bloomsbury on 12th February 1847. John Read was a licensed victualler and cutler. He died in February 1861. After his death, his widow moved the family to Lambeth. Elisabeth married Edwin Lephard, a farmer from Worthing, on 11th July 1878 at St John's Church, Brixton. A son Percy Edwin was born in 1879 and a daughter Dora Rose was born in 1882. The family lived in Lansdowne Road, Worthing until 1896, when Edwin inherited Church Farm and they moved into the Manor House in what was then Church Road (now the eastern end of Lansdowne Road). By 1911, Edwin was suffering from chronic asthma and died the following year in October. Elisabeth and her daughter moved to The Chalet in Cissbury Road, Broadwater after WW1. She died on 9th October 1925. Probate was granted on 16th November to Percy Edwin Lephard farmer. Effects £2827 12s 9d.
