Life story

Life story

Eleanor Charlotte Mary Warren was born in Wymering, Portsdown, Hampshire, she was baptised on 25th March 1858. Her parents were cousins, Richard Laird Warren, 37yrs, Captain, R.N., (born Scotland), and Eleanor Charlotte, 26yrs, nee Warren, she was 1 of 11 children.

Her father's naval career required the family to move frequently, from Hampshire to Jersey, C.I., and back to Portsmouth; by 1871 Captain Warren had been promoted to Admiral, R.N., and in 1875, aged 65yrs, he died in Portsea. Eleanor was unmarried and financially dependent on her mother, as were several of her sisters, and in 1881 they were living in St. Peter Port, Guernsey, C.I. Ten years later, the sisters and a brother, were living with their 70yr old mother in Worthing, at 20, Prince's Terrace, Heene, on the sea front. Her sister, Alice, 36yrs, was a Sister of Mercy Nun, and her brother, Mordaunt, 25yrs, was a Theological Student.  In 1895, after the death of her mother, Eleanor, now 37yrs, finally had private means to support herself. Her older brother, Pelham Laird, had entered the civil service, going into the Consular Service in China. He had been awarded a Knighthood, and was now Sir Pelham Warren, KCMG, living in Daventry, Northampton. Eleanor and her sister, Mary, were living with him in 1911.

Eleanor died, aged 75yrs, on 1st September 1933, her address was given as St. Andrew's Hospital, Northampton. Probate was granted to Ida Annie Bowles, spinster, effects £369 8s 7d. Value 2021 - £27K.
