Life story

Life story

Edwin was born in Clitheroe, Lancashire, the son of Thomas and Caroline Amelia. He was baptised in Clitheroe on 1st June 1850. His father was a teacher at the local Grammar school. By 1861, Thomas Howard was curate of Edenfield and as well as Master of the Grammar School. Edwin studied medicine in London, lodging in a house in Westminster. The household was very Bohemian. Besides medical students, many theatricals lodged there, including a music hall comedian, an artiste named "Lulu" aged 16, their Russian companion named Carola aged 20 and Lulu's agent Mr G A Farini. Once qualified, Edwin established a practice in Lambeth with his brother Heaton. On 23rd September 1884, Edwin married Emma Buckle Player at St Nicholas Church, Wandsworth. The couple moved to Broad Hinton in Berkshire. They had no children. By 1905, they were living in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight. After a short period in Surrey, Edwin and Emma moved to Worthing, living at "Lisowen" in Harrow Road. From 1915 until 1918, they lived at "Meadowbank" in South Street, Tarring. Emma died at "Etherley", 6 Dudley Villas (later 106), Rowlands Road on 20th March 1920. Her probate was dealt with by The Public Trustee. She was not buried at Heene. Edwin died at the same address on 4th May 1922. Probate was granted on 21st July to Hugh Meyrick Jones MD. Effects £1175 16s 4d.
