Story

Edwin was born in Marcham, Berkshire, the son of James and Martha. He was baptised privately at St Paul’s, Oxford on 11th December 1839. His father was a slater and plasterer. Edwin trained as a teacher and graduated in 1861 from Spring Hill College. He became a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. On 19th August 1874, Edwin married Amelia Burnett at St Saviour’s Church, Paddington. The couple lived in Tottenham for a while where Edwin taught at a local school. In1888, the family moved to Hereford where Amelia died. The following year, Edwin opened a boarding school for boys in Edgar Street, Hereford called Clyde House School. By 1911, Edwin had moved away from Hereford to Winchmore Hill.  In 1918, he moved to Worthing, living at “Westbury” 37 Grand Avenue. He died on 16th January 1923. Probate was granted on 28th February to Arthur Frederick Baker director. Effects £9324 0s 7d. Edwin’s will was published in the Worthing Gazette. His estate was divided equally between his son and four daughters.
