Edward Wesley Watts, was born into a family of boot and shoemakers; his great x 3 times grandfather, Nathaniel, the founder of the business, was trading in 1780 in Young Street, Kensington where he supplied handmade boots and shoes to the elite including members of the Royal Family at nearby Kensington Palace.

Edward's father was Nathaniel Lovel Watts who had owned seven shoe shops in London before moving to Worthing in

 about 1888 for health reasons. He set up his shoe business at 6, Chapel Road, where his family resided. 

Edward was the youngest of 6 siblings, Frederick 16, Charles 14, Emily 12, Edgar 5, and Alice 8: his sister, Margaret Louisa, aka. Maggie was born when he was 3yrs old, in 1891. Edward was listed as "Imbecile from Birth" on the 1891 census when he was 3yrs old. In 1901, Edward, 13yrs., and Maggie, 10yrs, both listed as "Imbecile from Birth", lived at Seeburgh, Lansdowne Road, Worthing with their mother, Emily 55yrs, nee Beedell. Edward Wesley Watts died on 4th December 1918, aged 31yrs. His death certificate gave the cause of death as "(1) Microcephaly, 31 years (2) Amentia. Heart failure."
