Life story

Life story

Edward Julian Sharood was born in 1839 in Hurstpierpont, Sussex to Charles and Lydia Sharood (nee Edwards).  Charles Sharood was appointed the first town clerk of Brighton on the 7th June 1854 until December 1862.  Afterwards Charles became a solicitor with offices at 46 Ship Street Brighton, where the family were living in 1851. 

Edward became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons on the 17th November 1860, and by 1861 he was living in Scotland but he was not practising as a surgeon.

In 1862 he had joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry where he was an Assistant Surgeon. 

He was serving at the Plymouth Hospital in 1872 and by 1876 he was promoted to Staff Surgeon. 

Edward married Henrietta Eliza Pitman on the 3rd August 1875 at the Parish church, St, Peter's, Plymouth, Devon. They had 5 children (1 child died, their name is unknown)-

In 1878 Edward, Henrietta and their Daughter's Ethel and Lilian moved to Vancover Island, Canada. Here Edward served at the Royal Naval Esquimalt Hospital as Staff Surgeon and by 1881 they were living in Metchosin, which is on the southern most tip of Vancover island.   On the 16th June 1883 he was promoted again to Fleet surgeon 

In 1891 the family have returned to England and they are living at 2 Blackheath Drive, Lewisham, London.  He retired from the Fleet on the 25th June 1893. 

By 1901 the family have moved to Worthing and are living in Southview Road, Worthing. Their Daughters Lilian and Ida have moved with them. They moved to 56 Rowlands Road Worthing by 1911, Daughters Ethel and Ida are living with them. Henrietta died on the 21st November 1911, and Edward died on the 3rd June 1929 still living at 56 Rowlands Road Worthing.  He left £2289 18s 2d (104,802 in 2020) to Ethel Beatrice Sharood, his Daughter.

Brighton Gazette - Thursday 29th November  1860

Royal College of Surgeons - Mr Edward Julian Sharood, son of the Town Clerk of Brighton, having undergone the necessary examination for the diploma, was admitted a member of the College at a meeting of the Court of Examiners on the 17th inst.

Mid Sussex Times - 8th May 1888

Death and Funeral of Mr Charles Sharood - Mr Charles Sharood died at his residence, Amwell place, High street, on Sunday week, at the advanced age of 78years. He was appointed the first Town Clerk of Brighton on the 7th June, 1854, and held the office until his resignation in December 1862. Upon the severance of his connection with the Corporation, Mr Sharood took offices in Ship street, where he has since carried on the practice of solicitor. Mr Sharood was twice married. By his first wife he leaves a grown-up family, and by his second marriage a young widow and three children. The funeral took place at the Parish Churchyard on Thursday morning, the body being interred in the south western portion of the ground. A number of floral offerings, sent by sympathetic friends, were laid on the coffin. Messrs. Hannington had charge of the arrangements.
