Life story

Edward James Riches was born on 30th November 1861, he was baptised at St. Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey on 1st February 1861. His father was Jeremiah John Riches, 37yr, Assistant Vestry Clerk, and his mother was Charlotte Harriet nee Harvey, 38yrs. He had 3 older brothers, Henry 6, William 5, and George 2. Edward entered the Drapery trade, then became a commercial traveller; in October 1884 Edward married Charlotte Lintott, 21yrs, born in Brighton, and they lived in Croydon where they had 2 sons, Clifford Edward Lintott Riches, 1886, and William Harvey Riches, 1887. Edward was a wholesale glover in 1886 and later became a hosier and hatter.

Edward moved to Worthing, living at 181, Rowlands Road, where he died on 23rd September 1895, aged 34yrs. His death certificate gave the cause of death as Pulmonary Phthisis 3 years, Exhaustion  Probate was granted to Charlotte, effects £758 0s 7d. Value 2021 - £102K.
