Life story

Edward John Chaffer was born in Sidlesham, Sussex, in 1856, he was baptised at St. Mary our Lady in Sidlesham, on 4th January 1857. Edward was the son of Henry Chaffer, 27yrs, a farm labourer, and Elizabeth, 27yrs, nee Beach. He was 1 of 8 children and had 3 brothers and 4 sisters, the boys all followed their father as farm labourers from the age of 12yrs after leaving school, but Edward moved on as a Gardener, leaving Sidlesham in his early twenties to work in Middlesex.

On 16th February 1885 Edward, 29yrs, married Isabella Challen, 26yrs, at St. Mary's Church, Broadwater, Worthing. They had 6 children, Edward b.1887, Herbert b.1888, Mabel b.1890, Ernest b.1895 (died 1897) Harold b.1897, and Ronald b.1903. In 1891 Edward and his family were living in Gillingham, Kent, he was employed as a gardener, and in 1901 they had returned to Worthing where they lived at The Rosery, Mill Road, and Edward worked as a fruit grower. It was a successful business and in 1911 both his older sons were employed as his assistants.

Edward and Isabella moved to Brooklyn, Valencia Road, Worthing, where Edward died, aged 71yrs, on 29th June 1928, probate was granted to his sons, Edward John and Herbert Sidney Chaffer, Fruit Growers, effects £10284 1s 8d. Value 2021 - £678K.
