Life story

Edward Hutton Bell was born on 21st July 1854 in Wellington, New Zealand. His father was Sir Francis Dillon Bell, 31yrs, KGMG CB, his mother, Margaret, 30yrs, nee Hort, both born in New Zealand. Edward had 2 brothers, Francis Henry Dillon Bell b.1851, and Alfred Dillon Bell b.1852. The family settled in London when Edward was a child, his father was appointed Agent General for New Zealand, a position he held until his retirement in 1891, when he returned to New Zealand.

Edward, aged 19yrs, went to Cambridge University, St. John's College, in 1873, he gained his BA in 1877 and MA in 1886; at sometime he was Assistant Master at Oundle School and Wimbledon College. Edward was ordained priest in 1881, he became Curate of Wimbledon 1880 1892 and then Vicar from 1902 1911. He served further appointments at Newington, Woolwich, and finally at St. Bartholomew's, Sydenham, from 1916 to his retirement in 1929. It was here that he met his future wife, Ivy Kathleen Hackney, who he married in 1930, in Kensington; Edward was 76yrs and Ivy was 42yrs, it was a first marriage for them both.

They moved to Worthing where they lived at 16, Lansdowne Close; Edward died just six years later, aged 82yrs, in 1936. Probate was granted to his widow, effects £127. Value 2021 - £9K.
