Life story

Life story

Edith Henrietta Anne Walker was born in Oxfordshire, she was baptised at St. Giles, Oxford, on 3rd March 1848. She was the daughter of Robert Walker, 46yrs, Clerk in Holy Orders, and Elizabeth, 44yrs, nee Holdsworth. Edith had 2 older siblings, Agnes, 11yrs, and Thomas, 6yrs; they appeared to be a wealthy family, as, when Edith was 3yrs old, and living at the Vicarage, Culham, Berkshire, they employed a governess, 2 nursery nurses, a footman, and 2 domestic servants. When Edith was 15yrs, in 1863, her mother died, and five years later, in 1868, her father also died. She moved with her brother, Thomas, to Kingston on Thames, Surrey, describing herself as his housekeeper in the 1871 census, whilst employing a footman, cook and housemaid.

On 9th June 1874 Edith, 26yrs, married Fielden Ramsbotham, 28yrs, at St. Mark, Surbiton, Surrey. They had 5 children, Edward b.1875, in Manchester, and James b. 1876, Edith b.1878, Mildred b. 1879, and Ruth b. 1884, all born in Sussex. Fielden was a Land Steward and Farm Bailiff, he worked in Sussex over the next 20yrs, and by 1901 had retired to Hereford with his family before moving to Bedfordshire, where they remained, with their adult daughters, until after 1911.
