Life story

Life story

Edith was born in Arthur's Town, County Wexford, the daughter of William and Maria. Her father was an excise officer. By 1871, the family were living in Beccles, Suffolk along with William's sister Maria and her children. William's wife Maria died in 1879. Edith sailed to Hobart, Tasmania before 1881, possibly to work as a teacher. On 28th February 1885, she married John McCance at All Saints Church, Hobart. Their daughter Edith Mary was born on 17th February 1887. John worked for The Royal Society of Tasmania specialising in research on sunspots. In June 1889, the family returned to England after selling their property at 31 Napoleon Street, Hobart. They settled in Worthing, living at Clifton Lodge in Chesswood Road with John's brother. John died in 1893 at St Chad's, St Michael's Road, Worthing and was buried at Heene. Edith moved to Dorset with her daughter. By 1931, she was living at 6 Rossmore Avenue, Parkstone. She died here on 5th January. Probate was granted on 19th February to Edith Mary McCance spinster. Effects £223 15s 7d. re-sworn £277 12s 4d.
