Life story

Life story

Edith was the youngest daughter of Evelyn and the Rev William Hunt. Like many Victorian daughters, she was destined to stay single, and live with her family all her life.

Her mother Evelyn was born in Southwell, Notts., daughter of Evelyn Richard Sutton Falkner of Burgage Manor, and Isabella (nee Jackson). Both parents were born in Southwell. They married in 1817 at St Mary-le Wigford, Lincoln.

Evelyn married Rev William Hunt in 1851 in Southwell. William Hunt was born in Southwark in 1824. In 1851 He was based at St Martins, in Birmingham. He was the son of William Joseph Hunt and Mary Ann nee Scarlett. On their marriage certificate, his father was described as William Joseph Hunt, Gentleman.

William  and Evelyn went on to have 5 sons and 3 daughters. 4 of their sons took Holy Orders, the other died as a child. Son Percy Lancelot became Rector of Clapham and Patching.

In 1861 at Alms Houses, in Stepney were Rev William (Chaplain and Headmaster), Evelyn, son Herbert Falkner, 7, born Birmingham, Agnes Evelyn, 5, born Bow, Margaret Isabella, 4, born London, Charly William, 2, born London, and Arthur Cyril 11 months, born London. Plus a Cook and a Nurserymaid.

Edith Mary was born in Stepney in 1862.

Rev Hunt, by 1971, was Chaplain of Bancroft Hospital, in Mile End, and the family were living in the Hospital. With them were Herbert, Edith Mary, Percy Lancelot and Bernard, all Scholars, plus 2 General Servants.

In 1881, Rev Hunt had become Rector of St Michael's, Cornhill, and the family were living in Highbury. Daughters Agnes, Margaret and Edith were with them, plus son Bernard and a Cook and a Housemaid.

Rev Hunt died in 1887. Subsequently, Mother Evelyn moved her family to Worthing.

At Roma, St Michael's Road, in 1891, were Evelyn, now widowed, living on her own means, with daughters Agnes and Edith and son Bernard, then a student in Theology. They had one Domestic Servant, widowed, 40-year-old, Mary Fennell.

In 1901, now at South Hill, St Michael's Road were Evelyn with daughters Agnes and Edith, plus General Servant, Mary Fennell.

The family hadn't changed by 1911.

When Evelyn died, at the great age of 95, she was still in St Michael's  Road. Probate was given to the Revs. Charles William and Percy Lancelot Hunt.

Her burial was conducted by her son, Rev Herbert Hunt, then Vicar of Cookham Dean.

In the 1921 Census, Edith and Agnes had moved to St Kilda, 44 Shakespeare Road. Sister Margaret later joined them on her retirement from teaching.

Edith Mary was living at 44 Shakespeare Road when she died in 1935, soon after her older sister Margaret. Her other sister, Agnes, died in 1939. Both Margaret and Agnes are buried in Heene Cemetery.
