Life story

Life story

Edith was the daughter of Edwin Turnbull and his second wife Mary Ann nee Heal. Edwin was a pianoforte maker and the family lived at 47 Sidney Street, Islington. Edith married William Arthur Bell, a clothier's assistant, born in County Antrim, on 1st February 1880. They began married life in Newington, London, moved to Prittlewell, Essex and by 1901 to Littlehampton, Sussex. They had ten children, three of whom had died by 1911. In the 1901 Census, William is not living with his family but Edith still describes herself as "wife". This was probably because William was already ill. He was admitted to the County Asylum in Norwich on 21st June 1901 and he remained there until his death on 21st November 1909 aged 51. His will left £818 to Edith. By 1921, Edith was at 18 Western Place, Worthing. She died on 4th August 1923.
