Doris Austin Hopper was born in Sunderland, Durham, on 9th March 1893, she was the daughter of John William Hopper, 29yrs, shipowner’s clerk, and Bertha, 28yrs, nee Hutt.
Doris had 2 older brothers, Bernard b.1889, and John b.1890.

The family lived in Sunderland for many years until her father retired when they moved to Hertfordshire; after his death in 1929, Doris continued to live with her widowed mother, moving to Devon and then Worthing, Sussex.
As a parishioner of Heene Church, Doris joined the Church Army, whose work was to help to form public conscience about such evils as slums and intemperate drinking, she involved herself in spreading their message through pageants and dramatic productions.
