Denys Francis Ranson was born on 28th February 1878 in Kensington, London. He was the son of Reverend Simon Mortlock Denys Ranson, 35yrs, and Maria, 38yrs, nee Wheeler; he had 3 older half-siblings, Florence b.1866, Gerald b.1867, and Helen b.1868, and a sister, Olive Mary b.1881.
Denys was at boarding school in Ore, Sussex, in 1891, he then attended Harrow School before entering Trinity College, Cambridge in 1896. Denys became a tea merchant in the grocery trade, he lived with his family and remained single.
Whilst at Cambridge, Denys had played golf for the university against Oxford, and was described as one of the foremost amateur golfers of his time. In 1907 he was the amateur champion of Sussex, and later in life he was the secretary of Seaford Golf Club.
In 1907 when his father retired, Denys moved to Crowborough, Sussex with his parents and in 1921 he was with his widowed father in Worthing, living at Glenaldon, Stoke Abbott Road, and after his father's death in 1930, he remained living there.
Denys died on 23rd October 1937, aged 59yrs, probate was granted to his sister, Olive Mary Fluck, Hay Bikker and Hugh Trevor Baber Mimpress, solicitors, effects £38,041 18s 8d.
