Life story

Life story

Clarence was born in Limehouse, London and baptised at St Paul's church, Bow Common on 18th June 1882. His mother was Ellen Elizabeth nee Gould and his father Thomas Grinyer, a clerk. Clarence was educated at Holy Trinity School, Selhurst, Surrey and at Whitehouse Road Boy's School, Croydon. He was awarded a prize at the age of 15. On leaving school in March 1897, he worked as a commercial clerk. In 1902, Clarence married Ellen Bechley King in Croydon but the marriage did not last. A son Martin Clarence was born on 11th April 1902. In 1911, Clarence and Martin were staying at the Red Lion Inn in Chichester and later census records show no sign of Mrs Grinyer. Later, Clarence's home was a one bedroom furnished flat at 2 Adelaide Road, Chichester, Sussex. From the 1920's, his home was "Piermont" in Tarring Road, Worthing until his death in 1938. He lived with his aunt Gertrude Jane Gould. Clarence died at Southlands Hospital, Shoreham, Sussex on 22nd November 1938. His estate was administered by Ernest Holland Merritt, a railway clerk and the son of Sarah Merritt nee Grinyer, sister of Thomas Grinyer.
