Life story

Life story

Clara  Matilda Rouse (nee Carter) was born on 27th October 1857 in Farncombe Surrey, to Jeffrey and Ann Carter. Clara's Father Jeffrey worked as a gardener and the family lived at Farncombe Street, Godalming, Surrey. 

In 1871 aged just 13, Clara was working as a servant to Richard Grey, a hop merchant living at The Terrace, Arlinda Villa in Godalming. 

In 1881 she had moved to Langley, Buckinghamshire, where she obtained a post of  servant to Robert Griffith, the Vicar of Colnbrook in Langley, Buckinghamshire.  By 1891 she had moved back home with her parents in Farncombe Street, Godalming. After her parent's death she moved in with her Sister Sarah and her Husband John in Lindfield Sussex. 

Clara married James Thomas Rouse on 30th April 1910 in Lindfield, Sussex, they did not have any children.

The couple moved to Worthing after they were married and lived at 9 The Drive, Worthing. 

James died in the latter quarter of 1912 while still living in Worthing. There does not appear to be a probate record for him. Clara continued to live at 9 The Drive, Worthing after her Husband's death, she had her Sister Mary living with her who was an invalid. 

Clara died in 1950 still living in The Drive, Worthing.  There does not appear to be a probate record for her.
