Story

Clara Braby 1851 – 1910

Clara was born in Heene, daughter of Thomas Clement, a ‘Landed Proprietor’, born in Pulborough, and Rhoda, born in Wisborough Green. Rhoda was Thomas’ second wife, he had six children by the time he married Rhoda in Dunsfold, in 1839, 7 years after he was widowed.

Living in Thakeham, in 1841, were Thomas and Rhoda, with 7 children.

In 1851 Clara was the 8th child. The family was living in West Chiltington and Thomas was described as a Farmer.

By 1861 the family was living in Broadwater Street, Thomas by now a Miller, and Rhoda described as ‘Laundry’. Son Alfred, at 14, was a Sailor, and Hugh, at 12, a Baker’s Assistant.

In the 1871 census, Rhoda was widowed, (Thomas died in 1870) and the family was still living in Broadwater. Rhoda died in 1872.

Edward Braby married Clara Clement in Broadwater Parish in September 1872.

Edward Braby’s father Edward, was a Shoemaker in 1851, in Storrington. He was from Eastbourne, and his wife, Eliza, nee Comper, from Lancing. (They had married in 1846 in Storrington.) Edward Junior, born in 1851, was then the youngest of their 3 children, all born in Storrington.

In 1861 and 1871, Father Edward, still a Shoemaker, and his family were living in Broadwater Street. In 1861, Eliza was described as a Shoe Binder. By 1871, Edward junior, was a Tailor, Robert a Baker, and there were 3 younger children. They had 8 children altogether, over 14 years.

In Kelly’s Directory for 1866 and also for 1878, under ‘Commercial’, Edward Senior is listed in Broadwater as a Shoemaker.

In the 1881 census, in Broadwater Street, were Edward Braby, a Tailor, Clara, children Ernest Edward, Edith and Frances, plus brother Frank Braby, a Leather Cutter, and Frederick Hubbard, 29, a deaf and dumb Bootmaker, from Thakeham. Ernest, Clara and Frances were born in Broadwater, but Edith, in Arundel.

Edward died in 1888, aged only 38, then living in Sussex Road.

In 1891 Clara was the Widowed Head of the Household in Sussex Road, and a Charwoman.

Her eldest child, Ernest, 17, was a Draper’s Porter, daughter Edith, at 15, a Mother’s Help, Frances Kate, 11, ‘just left school’, and there were 4 younger children, aged from 9 to 1. All the children, except Edith, were locally born.

Clara was still there until 1894.

From 1897 to 1899, Clara was on the Worthing Electors’ Register at 6 Milton St., Heene.

In 1901, at Avenue Nurseries in Boundary Road, were Clara, described as a Laundress, with daughter Kate, also a Laundress, and teenage sons Albert and Percy, Market Gardeners. There were also a son and daughter who were born after Edward’s death…

(In 1903, Kate married Edward Streeter, in Heene.)

In 1907, Clara was at 17, the Drive, Worthing, according to the Electors’ Register and

in 1909, she was on the Electors’ Register at 23 Howard Street.

She died at on 27th June, 1910 at 19, the Drive, of Carcinoma. Son Percy was present at the death. Clara was described as ‘widow of Edward Braby, Tailor Journeyman’

(In 1911, Kate (now Streeter), and living in The Drive, West Worthing, with husband Edgar, and 7-year-old son Ernest Edgar, had taken in her younger brothers Percival and Frank.  Percival, at 24, was a Nursery Gardener, and Frank, 16, ‘House Boy, Domestic’.

Ethel, then married to Michael Tighe, a Jockey, had sister Minnie, a Domestic Servant,  with her in 1911, living in Tarring.

Michael, a Steeplechase Jockey, was killed in 1926 in a crash between the Rolls Royce in which he was travelling to Gatwick racecourse and another car. He left £271.)
