Life story

Life story

Christopher was born in Tynemouth, Northumberland, the son of John and Sarah. His father was a stone mason and bricklayer. John died in 1867 at the young age of 43 and Sarah depended on her three eldest sons to support the family. Christopher worked as a joiner, Thomas and William worked as labourers, William leaving school at 14. Christopher moved to London and on 18th June 1883, married Martha Wright at St Barnabas church, Kensington. They had no children. The couple lived in Kensington where Christopher worked as a carpenter and joiner. By 1901, they were looking after a large house in Queens Gate Place as caretaker and housekeeper. The house belonged to Admiral Lord Hood of Avalon and his wife. The Admiral was ill and the couple had moved down to a family home in Somerset leaving Christopher and Martha to mind the property. Their neighbour was Hiram Maxim, inventor of the machine gun and arms manufacturer. Admiral Hood died in November 1901, and soon after this, Christopher and his wife moved to Worthing. They ran a boarding house on Marine Parade until 1914 when they moved to Mundesley, 9 Wordsworth Road where they took in lodgers. Christopher died here on 4th January 1935. Probate was granted on 31st January to Martha Fell, widow. Effects £492 13s 9d.

Martha died in 1943 and was buried beside Christopher at Heene.
