In 1879, Charles married Rosa Jane Griffiths in the city. The couple settled in Plymouth, firstly living with Charles’ brother William who was also a carpenter. Their daughter was born in 1881 and also called Rosa Jane. In 1883, the family decided to try their luck in Australia and sailed on “The Gladstone” arriving in Sydney on 7th October. Their official forms mentioned that both Charles and Rosa could read and write. By 1901, the family were back in England and living in their hometown of Plymouth. At the age of 18, daughter Rosa Jane married Harry Algar, a naval orderly. The marriage was not a success and Rosa moved back in with her parents.
