Life story

Life story

Charles was born in East Stonehouse, Devon, the son of William Elias and Isabella. His father was a carpenter and Charles followed him into this trade. By 1871, the family were living in Plymouth. In 1879, Charles married Rosa Jane Griffiths in the city. The couple settled in Plymouth, firstly living with Charles' brother William who was also a carpenter. Their daughter was born in 1881 and also called Rosa Jane. In 1883, the family decided to try their luck in Australia and sailed on "The Gladstone" arriving in Sydney on 7th October. Their official forms mentioned that both Charles and Rosa could read and write. By 1901, the family were back in England and living in their hometown of Plymouth. At the age of 18, daughter Rosa Jane married Harry Algar, a naval orderly. The marriage was not a success and Rosa moved back in with her parents. Harry Algar moved to Canada and in 1915 divorced his wife for adultery with a Francis John Pye. Rosa did not contest the divorce. Francis was killed in East Africa in 1916 and left Rosa his estate. They did not marry but she took his surname. She stayed with her parents and moved with them to Worthing after the war, living at 22 Heene Road. Charles' wife died in 1925 and was buried at Heene. Charles died on 29th December 1926. No probate.
